Learn to teach yoga in a safe and accessible way for every body. Transform your own personal practice and improve your ability to “read” your students' practice as you learn how to integrate the knowledge of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology into yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation. Learning the science of anatomy has the capacity to deepen your experience of each posture--discovering the most optimal stretch or engagement for your body. Moreover, understanding how the principles of alignment apply to each person's unique anatomical structure enables you to offer your students appropriate modifications and variations rather than forcing the body to fit into a preconceived shape. Common stresses and injuries for each part of the body will be explored. The goal is to maximize the healing and strengthening that is possible from the practice of yoga.
This is an experiential course where we will explore the major bones, muscles and joints and how they relate to yoga practice. The important role of fascia and connective tissue will also be included. Through discussion, observation, exercises, and practice of specific asanas, you will learn the location of the key anatomical regions and functions of the body. Although the focus will be on the principles and understanding of our physical anatomy, including biomechanics, the subtle anatomy of the energy body will also be addressed.
